Who shall be the master, and who the servant?
For a very long time in this Realm of spirit, the gods considered the relationship of intelligent beings to themselves. The spirits also considered this, though by a different pattern. Different kinds of workers arose among humans as a result, as various humans were called to certain paths or given certain gifts. Humans then gave names to these different workers.
When the gods called, they gained a priest.
When the spirits called, they gained a shaman.
When knowledge was researched and used properly, a magus or alchemist precipitated.
When the mind awakened, a seer (psychic or intuitive in modern parlance) opened their eyes.
When familial lines and natural lore came together, a witch was found at the crossing.
These are different types of work: gods, spirits, spells and alchemy, mind, mind and lore.
However, each of these different jobs has a specific set of relationships.
The priest and shaman are servants. They are called to serve, and in service are bound. Like the European concept of fealty, the relationship of master to servant implies the support of those whom they serve.
The magus and alchemist are masters. They command the knowledge they have spent themselves and their resources to gain. Often because of the investment they made, they felt compelled to protect it; there was no "Open Source" back in the day. They hid their knowledge in ciphers, implied references, and secret places, teaching only to properly initiated apprentices.
Seers and psychics are independents. They operate not by a call, but by their nature: they have ability which they must find a way to make useful to them. Some sold access to these abilities, giving psychics the mercenary reputation that many today try to combat -- but in older times, that's what you did with your personal ability. You used what you had to survive and prosper, be it strengths of body or mind, and there was no shame in doing so.
(Note: Shame on the unprosperous, a Victorian behavior, is actually an inversion of this belief! It arises out of the desire to believe one is blessed with wealth for having a virtuous nature, rather than having virtue natively regardless of wealth. It's a result of prosperity through labor, as the fealty bonds of nobility vanished into a strong middle class that had no noblesse oblige in their upbringing -- no reason to consider oneself of virtue by ability, belief, or birth. I've seen this manifest in many modern political conservatives: that work is what a person does, and if you don't work, you might not quite be a person. As any socially-, physically-, otherwise-variant person can tell you, personhood exists independent of external evaluation.)
Witches could have any relationship; they often choose independence or mastery, or become enmeshed in service to community. They are like both the seer and the magus, given gifts and knowledge which they then are able to use for themselves or others.
Note that if you are not called by spirit, you can still attempt to command it or make agreements. This is how some magi gained great power, some seers deeper insight, many witches their spirit familiars. I should explain that oracles and channels are essentially pathways for someone else's wisdom. This ability is often found as a companion to other abilities or work, rather than on its own. Of course, if you are not properly trained in these things, you can end up with more problems than you started out having. Anyone with access to spirit energies or spirits themselves can attempt this; I don't recommend it without learning how to be respectful of strangers and differing cultures, because spirits are not always like you, and don't always want to be accessible to you. Also, never, EVER call up what you can't put down -- and if you don't know if you can, then don't you dare. I've witnessed too many souls damaged by that sort of experience.
So now we come to the actual problem, hinted at in the title of this post. Do you see which relationship is missing?
It's partnership. Spirit agreements or contracts are a kind of partnership, but those are normally based in cost for service, and not friendship or mutual benefit. Only familiars are different, and that's mostly because modern Western culture views animals in the house as friends or family rather than servants. Something even Americans can freely thank French royalty for, right? ;)
However, as a soul who has incarnated on many worlds, and known many foreign species, I have met that relationship.
In a partnership people act essentially as equals, each contributing what they may to the work at hand. Sometimes partnerships are unbalanced in ability, but balanced in intimacy. Remember that healthy relationships are proportional; not every person can give the same amount in every area, but each partner should give what they are able.
Now, I was called to spirit, but I was supposed to teach a new way. Partnership is the new way. I am a master, but I wish to serve; but I will not be compelled to service. Partnership is the balanced method by which one may serve and not be compelled to it.
Unfortunately, we don't have a name for the sort of spirit-related job that forms a partnership. Because I am a healer and spirit worker, "shaman" was the obvious job name, but "shaman" is inadequate for those who should not be compelled. A shaman often loses nearly everything they had or knew in their previous life in order to join their new role of service to spirit and their people, and shamans who refuse to serve generally lose things, become sick, or even die. Me getting sick and losing everything turned into a flat-out disaster. So we need to find a new name, reducing the presumption that I should fulfill the relationship of servant to master.
Dragons have a name for this relationship in a job or work role. It is the "La'ke thu-ha'ni." This translates as "forth-being passage-of gods-breath" or "Empowered" (person embodying Spirit). Other peoples, from other worlds, often call this role simply: "Awakened."
Krishna, as the Avatar of Brahma, was Awakened. Jesus, as the Avatar of YHWH, was Awakened. Buddha was Awakened. Note how two became deified, and Buddhism constantly strives not to deify its first teacher. Those who are Empowered or Awakened work in partnership, becoming not the "horses" or "mounts" of Voudun loas, not the familiars of witches (lesser beings to greater), not the servant of another nor their master, but equals. These persons are often considered Avatars (persons embodying or manifesting as gods) as well, manifesting the nature of that which fills them, but this is not always the case.
It is time on Earth that we now meet new awakened persons. The old relationships are good, but they are not complete without this one. As equals we shall meet, and as equals we shall part, each relationship in balance to the others, each job in balance to the others. Instead of being only Avatars and Messiahs, we shall be balance-workers, no more or less powerful and special than the others.
As it should be.
Summary
By call: Priest (gods), shaman (spirits), seer/psychic (personal ability), magus (spells and mysteries), alchemist (chemistry and natural energies), witch (ability and natural lore), empowered (manifestation).
By relationship: Servant (the shaman serves a community, the priest serves one or several gods or major spirits), Partner (empowered/awakened can partner with anyone but usually choose beings philosophically aligned with them), Independent (psychics, usually), Master (magus); witch could take any role.
When the gods called, they gained a priest.
When the spirits called, they gained a shaman.

Thank you!
Good and kind Zeeth Kyrah, this message box is not the place to ask this, but I must take my chances: I sent you a PM (here on Dreamwidth) a while ago and I am wondering if you received it?
There is a passion burning inside of me that compels me to try and talk to you about some things...
If you do not talk to people privately/in PM, I completely understand!
Thank you for your consideration!
Re: Thank you!
Re: Thank you!
Perhaps Skype? AIM? E-mail? Some...other modality?
I understand if you're not feeling well enough to talk, but understand this: I come in peace. If my flesh were stripped away, there is only a being of pure light; a kind and warm soul that just wants to reach out to you.
What say you?
Re: Thank you!
I could do some sort of IM or MU*. Email never really worked as a chat medium for me.
Re: Thank you!
Your posts sort-of set the tone. Make me all...gushy and spiritual.
I'm not sure if we should meet and chat as dragons or as humans.
Skype chat? Skype name is raddazin
