Presumably it wouldn't cease all function, but there are net-connected elements in a *lot* of software these days. It's possible, however, that such machines might demand a net connection or stop the OS from letting you log in. I know that my Chromebook has been like that, which worries me, though its other functions mostly work if the internet is out (obviously the web browser doesn't).
Too much of computing is based around the idea of tracking and controlling what people do with it.
